Everyone argues differently. Some do it overtly by yelling, while others do it more subtly by avoiding conversation. Whatever the manner employed, it often results in hurt feelings and a loss of productivity.

A lot of management books shy away from the issue of conflict, coining it as either indicative of a failure on the part of management, or a failure on the part of the employee. It is rarely perceived as being a healthy by-product of intelligent debate when different approaches and personalities come face-to-face.

However, there are ways to help you argue constructively, and if done correctly, it can be a pathway to growth, problem solving and higher profits. It’s better to have a team of empowered employees who are capable of exploring different viewpoints than a bunch of yes-people who back off from discussions when faced with the slightest resistance.

Arguing should be a give-and-take of ideas reaching a constructive conclusion. You should be able to enjoy a good discussion both for and against your points. Discussions can be followed by question-and answer-sessions. Although the atmosphere may become more challenging than friendly, but it will give everyone a chance to think on their feet. Being passive never helped anyone learn anything!

Here are some tips on how to argue at the workplace:

Speaking up assertively and positively when disagreeing with others is important.

You should answer negative speech in a way that promotes understanding rather than hostility.

Don’t make rash decisions about your colleagues. Instead, make the effort to get to know them and why they say what they do. Your perception of their viewpoints may be different and more understanding once you get to know them better.

Infighting tends to survive in an immature atmosphere. Treat others like a grown up, and they will more likely reciprocate.

Never become abusive — you will lose your respect and credibility in no time. If your nerves are frayed, move away from the scene for some time to cool down.

Try to maintain a calm mind even if your point is not being heard. You can always bring it up later in a different setting.

Obviously, it’s better to steer clear of arguments unless something truly important is at stake. Even then, it’s possible to have intense productive discussions that don’t turn into altercations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great Minds Do Not Think Alike: Avoiding Groupthink

Have you ever wanted to voice your opinion in a meeting/group but decided against it because you did not want to go against the majority? On the other hand, have you ever been a leader of a team in which the members hesitated to express their own opinions? If so, you were probably a victim of “Groupthink”.

What it is

The term “Groupthink” was coined by Irving Janis in 1972. It is a phenomenon that happens when the wish for a group consensus overshadows the individual team member’s common sense or wish to express alternatives or an unpopular opinion. That is, the desire for maintaining group cohesion stamps out good decision-making and problem solving.

Today, employers are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that Groupthink discourages the end of creative and independent thought. Groups who are tightly-knit together are likely to adapt to each other’s opinions, thus making the nurturing of independent thought almost impossible. This can result in bad judgments and wrong decisions being made. It may also lead to the decision makers rationalizing their poor decisions after they fail. Obviously, groupthink is a highly unsatisfactory way to deal with complex issues. Thus, it must be avoided at all costs.

How to avoid it

Here are some tips that can help you avoid groupthink:

If you have an opinion that goes against the group, you should start off by saying something to the effect of, “Although this is going against the way we are thinking right now, but..”. This will make others more open to what you have to say and you will be heard sympathetically rather than pushed into a corner by the majority.

If you are a leader, be neutral when giving a decision-making task to a group, and avoid stating preferences and expectations at the outset as that puts pressure on others to agree.

Encourage dissent and alternative comments amongst your team. If you convey the message that contradicting the leader is bad, the group as a whole will most likely agree with everything you have to say just to avoid inciting conflict. Instead, let everyone know that you feel that open and frank communication results in good decision-making and a healthy culture. Allow the airing of any objections and doubts, and be open to criticism.

For complex issues, it may be a good idea to divide the group into two separate ones, to gain a different set of insights. Even within groups, you may appoint discussion leaders for different topics which will enhance the flow of unbridled and creative thought.

Once you reach an initial consensus on a major decision, all remaining doubts should be heard out and the matter reconsidered, if necessary.

Outside experts should be consulted in crucial matters.

Allow anonymous feedback. Since groupthink is prevalent due to people being hesitant to voice controversial ideas in front of their colleagues/seniors, you can avoid it by allowing opportunities for everyone to voice their feedback anonymously as well. For example, keep a closed suggestion box in the room with small slips of paper.

After each meeting, ask everyone to give their comments on the decision/issue at hand.

Whenever you notice that Groupthink is occurring, point it out to the group. Being aware of it is the first step in avoiding it.

Detroit Free Press

Reprint: Liven Up Your Interiors Using Colors

Color is an essential decorating tool. It’s what you notice first about a room and its interiors. The color scheme you use has the ability to change the perceived shape and size of furnishings as well as the perceived shape and size of the room itself. This is one important aspect of your decorating plan that’s both exciting and fun to work with!

The Psychology Of Color

One of the biggest factors that influence the human state of mind is color. The psychology of color and how it affects human behavior is a science in itself. Actually, color itself does not affect us; rather, it is what our perception of that color is, that does.

Looking around at restaurants, classrooms and offices, one can see that the colors they are painted in influences the behavior and mood of the people who frequent these places. Even consumer products are packaged in bright colors to attract attention.

If the use of colors is so important in places outside the home, why do people hesitate to use color inside their home? The first step is to understand the psychological effects that specific colors have on us. The color black, for example, may represent elegance to one person but, to another, it may represent death. If those two people were placed in a room with everything being black, the first would come out of the room feeling elegant. The second, however, would be depressed and upset. Though both were in the same room and saw the same things, they had different feelings about that room.

It is also essential to know what the general perception of a color is. For instance, red is known to stimulate the taste buds, so it’s an excellent choice for dining rooms. Green and blue are fresh and calming colors, and could be used for bedrooms. Yellow and orange are very cheerful, so can be used where you would like to feel energized, like the kitchen.

The Use Of Color In Interiors

Any color can work in a room, but the choice of exact colors can only begin once you ask yourself the following three questions:

What is my perception about this color?
What is the intended style of the room I want to use this color in?
What am I going to use this room for?

A good color scheme is the first step to having a beautiful home. A color scheme refers to a planned, pleasing, and interesting combination of colors for a room or a house. Considerations While Selecting A Color Scheme

The colors you and your family generally like.
Your existing furniture and accessories. These may limit possible color choices. For example, if you already have an existing color scheme, you would have to use colors that would not clash with it.

The shape and size of the room. If a room is smaller than 12 by 15 feet, using light colors will make the room look larger. Painting the woodwork around doors, windows, ceilings, and floors an identical color as the walls will give a spacious effect as well.

The shape and size of the furniture. For example, if the furniture is huge in size, it might be more in harmony with the room if it is covered in a fabric that is the same or similar color as the walls behind it. However, if you have furniture of a special shape or size which you would like to highlight, you could use a different color fabric or cushions for it.

Relationship of the room to adjacent rooms. If the door between rooms is going to be kept open most of the time, having a similar color scheme in the two rooms would be a good choice.

Brighten Up!

We are constantly enveloped in a wide spectrum of colors. The competitive environment leaves no room for error. Organisations must delight their customers and constantly look for new ways to exceed expectations. But how do they do it?

The answer may lie in Six Sigma, now a buzzword in corporate management circles. Six Sigma Six Sigma is a management philosophy that propagates setting extremely high objectives, collecting data and analysing results to a minute degree so as to reduce defects in products and services. Sigma is the Greek symbol for standard deviation in Statistics. This standard deviation measures the number of variations in a process.

“Six Sigma is a disciplined approach to business process improvement,” explains associate vice-president, Infosys Technologies Ltd. Dr. Vivekanand Kochikar. “It helps achieve significant quality and performance improvements without requiring significant investment.”

Although Six Sigma was started in Motorola in its manufacturing division, it eventually evolved and was used in other non-manufacturing companies such as AlliedSignal and GE. It has since been used by Ford, Caterpillar, Microsoft, Seagate, Siemens and also Merrill Lynch. Six Sigma is now used in several management initiatives and can be applied to any sector where the control of variation is desired, such as services, call centres, medical and insurance procedures.

Incidentally, Mumbai’s super-efficient dabbawalas were given a Six Sigma rating by Forbes magazine. About 5,000 dabbawalas work daily in a finely tuned system to deliver tiffins in an exercise that begins at 9 am and ends at 5 pm. According to the article, only one mistake for every eight million deliveries is their norm.

How it works

Six Sigma is a data-driven, customerfocused management methodology that improves the process performance, decreases levels of variation and maintains consistent quality of the output. This results in a reduction in defects and improvement in product quality, profits and customer satisfaction.

The philosophy behind Six Sigma is that by measuring how many defects are in a process, you can figure out how to systematically eliminate them and get as near to perfection as possible. For a company to achieve Six Sigma, it cannot produce more than 3.4 defects per million parts (or opportunities).

In almost any sector, including accounts, customer-service, logistics and marketing, every process can be analysed in terms of its adherence to Critical To Quality (CTQ) parameters. This is because defects can be present whether it’s a customer transaction, an engineering design, a banking transaction, or even in the time it takes to treat a patient at a hospital.

Thus, any process that deviates from an ideal level can cost extra time, labour, and material. “Over time, Six Sigma serves as a mechanism for cultural transformation in organisations by making managers more data-oriented and using sound techniques in decision-making,” said managing director, Naresh N Shahani of Breakthrough Management Group India. “Many organisations today do not promote managers or staff until they have been trained in Six Sigma.”

Benefits

“Six Sigma helps companies focus on the customer,” said Shahani. Its system helps companies identify and manage the key input variables that have a major impact on output. This helps them optimise processes and save money by eliminating defects and reducing variation in processes. Typically, companies use a projectbased approach in implementing Six Sigma. Each project helps the company save from Rs. 10 to a crore, depending on the size of the company and the project.

Methodologies

Six Sigma DMAIC: It is a process that Defines, Measures, Analyses, Improves, and Controls existing processes that fall below the Six Sigma specification.

Six Sigma DMADV: Defines, Measures, Analyses, Designs, and Verifies new processes or products that are trying to achieve Six Sigma quality.

Design For Six Sigma: Six Sigma can also be used to create a brand new business process from scratch using Design For Six Sigma principles.

Training

There are three levels of training in the Six Sigma quality system: Black Belts, Green Belts and Yellow Belts. An external Six Sigma expert trains Master Black Belts. Black Belts are the on-site experts who will develop and lead cross-functional teams, and advise management on prioritising, planning and launching Six Sigma They are the ones who are directly responsible for the execution of projects in a Six Sigma organisation. The Master Black Belts then train black, green, and yellow belts. Green Belts are the organisation’s employees who execute Six Sigma in their jobs. They have less Six Sigma responsibility and their efforts are focused on projects that are directly related to their daily work.

Success factors

Since Six Sigma employs a strongly data-driven approach and places emphasis on measurement at every stage, ensuring the availability of reliable data is critical. If the process selected does not meet this requirement, the methodology is unlikely to work. Six Sigma is heavy on Statistics, but process change is about mindset too, and so the people aspect receives considerable focus. Shahani emphasises that establishing the Six Sigma management system is critical to success. “The company needs to also make a commitment to have full time Black Belts. These Black Belts should be selected carefully from within the organisation and their career planned carefully to send the right signals to other employees.”

Concurs Suresh Tiwari, Vice President, HR, Eli Lilly (India): “The selection of Black Belts is important. In the initial phase of implementation, there is a mix of uncertainty, and a resistance to change. Therefore, in addition to the senior management’s commitment, the quality of the Black Belt is also very critical. The Black Belt should have leadership qualities in addition to technical capabilities to remove the barriers fast.”

Constant communication and involvement of all stakeholders at all stages are a must to ensure the project stays focused and does not lose momentum. Only then will the project be able to draw the energy for its sustenance from all the stakeholders involved, rather than from just the identified owners or champions.

Says Kochikar, “It is advisable to clearly articulate the benefits in terms people can relate to. For example, rather than simply portraying reduction of defect density as a goal, it is a good idea to translate that reduction into the cost savings the customer will get.” The senior management needs to also be absolutely in accord and committed to bring this discipline. Six Sigma initiatives are long-term and hence require ample commitment, dedicated resources and willingness to look at everything critically. Shahani agrees: “Management’s commitment and their role in setting goals and identification of the right projects is critical.

Pertinent issues

Today large and small companies have launched Six Sigma initiatives. However for many it is just joining the bandwagon. According to Tiwari, at times people think every problem will have a Six Sigma solution, which is not the case. “There are certain problems, which need a quick-fix solution and then there are problems related to culture and people that cannot be addressed using Six Sigma,” he adds. However, some companies, which took the effort to build the necessary infrastructure early on, have reaped the benefits of Six Sigma over the years and saved crores of rupees.

Six Sigma has evolved into a global movement to enhance the mechanisms for improving businesses. If companies want to remain competitive, they must invest in their core competencies. And seeing the positive results of Six Sigma on a firm’s competitiveness, it is indeed a proposition that makes smart business sense.

4thD Woman

Excerpt: Goa, A Traveller's Paradise!

Goa is a traveller’s paradise, sandwiched between the seas and the lush forested hills. It offers glistening beaches, swaying coconut palms, and ultra fresh seafood. Luxury hotels as well as budget guesthouses overlook the glistening sands. Beautiful beaches, silvery sands, fabulous flora and fauna and marvelous churches, all make Goa a hot tourist destination and perhaps the most sought after one in India. It provides splendid views of green hills wooded with jackfruit, mango, and cashew groves bordered by miles of sun-drenched beaches. Gentle and unspoilt people, along with a warm and languid climate, complete this breathtaking kaleidoscope.

But there’s so much more to Goa than sun, sand and psychedelia. Goa can also boast of its rich cultural and historical heritage. In fact, one of the most discerning assets of Goa is it’s rich cultural heritage. Goan folklore comprises folk songs, dances, music, visual arts and folk tales rich in content and variety.

The allure of Goa is that it remains quite distinct from the rest of India and is small enough to be explored in a manner that other Indian states are not. It is hardly surprising that the Portuguese who came in search of spices in 16th century decided to put down roots in this tropical paradise, and four and a half centuries of their rule left its imprints everywhere. Goa’s traditions of language, religion, dances have remained firmly entrenched despite the end of Portuguese rule in 1961. Roman Catholicism remains a major religion in this former Portuguese colony.

In Goa, Latin influence merges with Indian colour to produce an enchanting amalgamation. There is a Mediterranean-like atmosphere in the quaint towns with their red-tiled roofs and narrow streets and the charming fishing villages surrounded by coconut groves. It is easy to become a part of Goa’s warm, effortless existence. It’s east-west mix, beaches and party culture is what attracts approximately two million visitors each year. It is currently renowned for its rave (electronic music) parties and its beaches.

Gurlz

Click on the links below to read the articles:

Good night?

Be What You Want To Be

Abraham Maslow, a famous psychologist, once stated that it is very common for men and women to often ‘sell themselves short.’ One of the topmost personal attributes one can possess is self-confidence.

Getting a firm sense of control over your life is a matter of setting clear goals/objectives and establishing a sense of direction based on those objectives.

Improve relationships

The more self-confident you become, the better the quality and quantity of your relationships will be. People will be attracted to your personality and you will therefore get more opportunities to meet nicer, more self-confident, interesting and enjoyable people.

Boost that confidence

Not only can self-confidence help you make new friends, it can even help you get a promotion. This is because supervisors often value a self-confident and positive attitude even more than your actual knowledge about your job.People sometimes lack self-confidence because they see themselves poorly in comparison to others. First of all, remember that no one can affect your thoughts or perceptions unless there is something that you want from them, or something you want them to stop doing. The bottom line is that inner confidence is the key to it all.

Project a self-assured image

Even though you may be shivering with insecurities inside, if you look outwardly confident, it will be easier to converse with others and make you more approachable as well.

Become a good conversationalist

Everyone admires and secretly envies an individual who has the ‘gift of the gab.’ However, such people are not necessarily born with this ability. Usually, it is an acquired trait learned over a period of time. So, try to inculcate this ability.

Trust yourself

Trusting yourself to accomplish anything and make the right choices — even if they sometimes do not serve you well — demonstrates genuine inner confidence.

Become good at what you do

This way, you will immediately distinguish yourself from the average person who drifts from failure to failure and accepts mediocrity as a satisfactory standard.

Exercise the muscle

The more open you are to risks and opportunities, the more confident you will be required to be and, consequently, the more confidence you will develop.

Stop the negative chatter

If the little voice inside your head is always criticising you, it is time to nip it in the bud. But positive thinking can come to the rescue. Repeating positive affirmations such as ‘I am a great and capable person’ will start you on the right track.

Practice makes perfect

Ponder over who you are, what you believe in, and what is important to you. Keep practicing developing your self-confident image and it will soon come naturally to you.

Long Island Woman

Article URL: Liven Up Your Interiors Using Colors

Color is an essential decorating tool. It is what you notice first about a room and its interiors. The color scheme you use has the ability to change the perceived shape and size of furnishings as well as the perceived shape and size of the room itself. This is one important aspect of your decorating plan that is both exciting and fun to work with!

The Psychology Of Color

One of the biggest factors that influence the human state of mind is color. The psychology of color and how it affects human behavior is a science in itself. Studies indicate that color itself does not affect us, rather it is what our perception of that color is, that does. Most people have heard phrases such as “green with envy” and “in the pink”. Looking around at restaurants, classrooms and offices, one can see that the colors they are painted in influences the behavior and mood of the people who frequent these places. Even consumer products are packaged in bright colors which are chosen to attract attention and make one want to buy. If the use of colors is so important in places outside the home, why do people hesitate to use color inside their home? And why do people insist on using neutral colors only? Are neutral colors perceived to be a “safe” bet?

The first step is to understand the psychological effects that specific colors have on us. The color black, for example, may represent elegance to one person but, to another, it may represent death. If those two people were placed in a room with everything being black, the first would come out of the room feeling elegant. The second, however, would be depressed and upset. Though both were in the same room and saw the same things, they had different feelings about that room. Before proceeding with a specific color, it is also essential to know what the general perception of that color is. For instance, the color red is known to stimulate the taste buds, so it is an excellent choice for dining rooms. Both green and blue are fresh and calming colors of our natural environment, and thus could be suitable choices for bedrooms. Yellow and orange are very cheerful and energizing like the sun, so they can be the right choices in rooms where you would like to feel energized, like the kitchen.

The Use Of Color In Interiors

Any color in the rainbow can work in a room, but the choice of exact colors can only begin once you ask yourself the following three questions:

What is my perception about this color?
What is the intended style of the room I want to use this color in?
What am I going to use this room for?

If you want to have a beautiful home, you need not worry about following current trends, because trends are famous for just coming and going. Sonia, a homemaker who has used colors skillfully to decorate her home, feels, “The people who reside in the home can easily make it beautiful by choosing colors that indicate their personalities and their likings.” This is easily done by deciding on a color scheme. A color scheme refers to a planned, pleasing, and interesting combination of colors for a room or a house.

Ideas For A Color Scheme

Back to Nature - If one casts a glance at their natural surroundings, such as flower gardens, lawns, and lakes, they will see the most pleasing and beautiful combinations of colors available.

Personal likings - If you have a preference for specific colors occurring together, you might like to use them together in a room.

Accessorizing - A painting, a rug, a vase, or stained glass with nice colors may give you an idea for a color combination.

Color wheel - Colors that are adjacent each other or colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel can form the basis for a color scheme.

Considerations While Selecting A Color Scheme

The colors you and your family generally like.
Your existing furniture and accessories. These may limit possible color choices.
The shape and size of the room. If a room is smaller than 12 by 15 feet, using light colors will make the room look larger. Painting the woodwork around doors, windows, ceilings, and floors an identical color as the walls will give a spacious effect as well.
The shape and size of the furniture. If the furniture is huge in size, it might be more in harmony with the room if it is covered in a fabric that is the same or similar color as the walls behind it.
Relationship of the room to adjacent rooms. If the door between rooms is going to be kept open most of the time, having a similar color scheme in the two rooms would be a good choice.

Tips For Decorating With Color

The following tips will help you arrange colors effectively so that you can enhance a room without creating a cluttered look:

Use only two to four colors in a room at a time.
Use different colors in different quantities. One color should always dominate and the other colors should accentuate.
Balance a specific color in a room by repeating it throughout the room instead of using it in just one portion of the room.
Camouflage defects in the architecture, such as unevenness in wall plastering or an improperly fitted door frame, with subtle and neutral paint colors that blend with the remaining neutral walls, floors, and ceiling.
Give emphasis to desirable architectural aspects like bay windows or fireplaces by using strong color contrasts there.
Give a room a “larger” feel by using furniture that is the same color as the walls. This makes the furniture seem to disappear.
Use strong and bright colors when you would like the room to be stimulating or if you want to make a large room feel cozy.
If the furnishings in the room are few and uninteresting, using a dramatic color scheme on the walls or floor has a good effect.
If you have strikingly beautiful accessories like rugs or paintings, you can draw attention to them by using subtle or neutral colors on furnishings.
In order to create a neutral color scheme in a room, you can use a variety of “un-colors” like browns, grays, beiges, whites, and taupes.
Varying textures and patterns is absolutely critical when going for neutral color schemes or “one-color” schemes in a room.

Using Strong Colors

A lot of attention is being given to the use of bold colors in wild combinations such as violet and lime green, orange and fuchsia, or turquoise and red-orange. But one must be careful not to just casually throw colors together. Violet and lime green can work since they are complementary colors (opposite each other on the Color Wheel). Orange and fuchsia won’t clash either, because they sit next to each other on the Color Wheel. That is why it is worth investing in a good Color Wheel, so you can see beforehand how different color combinations look.

An important point to consider is whether you can live with, for example, a turquoise and red room for an extended time. This does not imply that strong and dramatic colors do not have their place. Subtle, neutral wall colors (like off-white and taupe) are safe bets, not to mention very easy to live with. However, livening them up with bright highlights in your upholstery and accessories gives a lovely touch. “For example, a bright multi-colored rug, a few colored vases, stained glass decorations, vivid paintings, oval mirror-work cushions in jewel tones, bright foliage, and eye-catching prints are all ways of accessorizing a room with style,” observes Sonia.

The cumulative effect will be soothing and the bursts of color will give provide a signature statement. Strong and dramatic colors are first best experimented on rooms with less usage like hallways. Try thinking of yourself as a chef creating a recipe which consists of the perfect ratio of ingredients - a generous serving of violet with a scoop of pearl and a sprinkling of burgundy could turn out to be exactly the right recipe for your room. Finalize your main color course and then add carefully selected appetizer colors to your platter.

Brighten Up!

We are constantly enveloped in a wide spectrum of colors. It could even be said that there are too many color choices available today, which sometimes makes it very difficult to make a confident choice. But, by skillfully applying colors on the canvas that is your room, you can easily create a masterpiece of your own. Have fun with colors. Along with livening up your interiors, you will be livening up your life!

Rediff.com

Click on the links below to read the articles:

Learn to be more assertive!

Are you still dating your spouse?

Seven Techniques To Help You Relax

Is honesty at work always the best policy?

Plagued by loneliness?

Appraisal in April?
